Composer William (Bill) Holland has died on 12 February 2021 at the age of 94.

Holland was born in Mosman, NSW in 1927. He worked a long career as surveyor and planning officer (Emeritus Surveyor, New South Wales, 1996) while studying composition and writing music in his free time, and also conducting some formal studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, including in violin and theory. His teachers over the years included Franz Holford, Raymond Hanson and Cyril Monk and, after his retirement in 1986, Dulcie Holland (not a relative) and Emlyn Lewis Jones. He received a Licentiate in Composition (with honours) in 2002 from the Australian Society of Musicology and Composition. In February, 2010, he received a Certificate of Recognition for attending the Sydney Conservatorium of music and was recognised as an alumnus of the University of Sydney.

Many of Holland's works were inspired by the Australian landscape, in particular the Blue Mountains, and he was deeply engaged with issues to do with the environment, climate change and social justice.

William Holland continued writing music until his last years.
