Speak Percussion's Emerging Artists program
Speak Percussion's Emerging Artists Program gets underway in Melbourne on Monday 6 December with a five-day Creative Development Week culminating in a workshop performance on Friday 10 December at 6pm at the VCA Secondary School. A rehearsal period and final performance of the new works created takes place in April 2011.
The program explores the process of creating new works through a collaborative process: participants include both emerging percussionists and emerging composers. Each emerging artist (composer or percussionist) is allocated to a mentor and to a peer. These groups of three then collaborate to support the young composer in creating sketches of a new composition that will be workshopped during the week. Artists and their mentors work intensively to hone their skills and to develop and explore the composers' original material. There are lessons, masterclasses, lectures and forums covering technical advice, individual/group work, as well as the development of chamber music skills.
Participants include percussionists Madeleine Chwasta (VIC), Rory Hannan (VIC), Anna Ng (VIC), Kaylie Melville (WA), and Lionel Pierson (WA); and composers Micah Brown (QLD), James Paul (WA), Owen Salome (NSW), Emily Sheppard (VIC), and Chris Williams (NSW).
The participants benefit from the guest composition lecturer, Thomas Meadowcroft, the Berlin-based Australian composer, along with Eugene Ughetti and the experienced players of Speak Percussion.
