Soundstream festival 11-14 October 2012

The program for the fourth instalment of the Soundstream: Adelaide New Music Festival (11-14 October 2012) features 10 world and 10 Australian premieres.

Opening night will see Jon Rose push the boundaries in his first solo performance in Adelaide. A concert by pianists Gabriella Smart and Paul Grabowsky will feature two world premieres, by Grabowsky and Mary Finsterer, as well as Stravinsky's two-piano transcription of The Rite of Spring (event details). A world premiere by Elena Kats-Chernin will be included in a free concert at the Adelaide Town Hall featuring 60 pianists and 30 pianos.

Jon Rose will also perform together with the festival's artist-in-residence, Slovakian Daniel Matej. For a composers' forum on Saturday 13 October, Matej will be joined by three Australian composers: Elena Cats-Chernin, Mary Finsterer and Cat Hope.

The festival celebrates its inaugural Young Composers' Award in a Soundstream Collective concert with new works by all six finalists, including the AMC's associate artists Annie Hsieh, Melody Eötvös, Nicole Murphy and Melisande Wright. They will be competing for a $5,000 prize for a future commission. Audiences are also invited to have their say through the People's Choice Award. A new work by Cat Hope will also receive its first performance in this concert.

Founded in 2008 by Artistic Director Gabriella Smart, the Soundstream: Adelaide New Music Festival was awarded the Arts SA Ruby Award for Best Event in 2009 for its inventive programming.
