Soundstream Collective - the new ensemble in South Australia

The new ensemble-in-residence at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, the Soundstream Collective, will have its inaugural concert in Adelaide on 30 September. Created under the auspices of the J M Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice, the Soundstream Collective is supported by a significant grant from the University of Adelaide to commission new works and to stage a series of eight public performances over the next two years.

The Collective is comprised of a core group of musicians with an ongoing commitment to Australian and international new music: Elder Conservatorium staff members pianist Gabriella Smart (also the ensemble's artistic director), clarinettist Peter Handsworth and percussionist Andrew Wiering, as well as the Brisbane-based cellist John Addison. Depending on the repertoire, the ensemble also draws on the talents of other new music practitioners.

The new ensemble sets out 'to foster much-needed opportunities for collaboration and engagement in new music composition, performance and appreciation'. In particular, the Collective wants to encourage participation by young people in the composition, performance and enjoyment of new music. The Collective is also committed to showcasing local talent and creating a national profile for new music in South Australia. The ensemble was established on the foundations of the successful Soundstream festival, held to date in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

'The Collective is a platform for collaboration, discourse and performance of new music and will be committed to the development of contemporary music practices and the creation of new works through the support of emerging and established Australian composers and performers. The result is a unique experience in contemporary chamber music', Gabriella Smart says.

A special Soundstream Commissioning Fund, to be officially announced in the first concert, will invite tax-deductible donations for commissioning new works.

The theme for the inaugural 2011-2012 season is 'meetings - intertextual, intercultural, interdisciplinary encounters'. The first concert will feature world premieres by John Polglase and Erik Griswold, alongside Australian premieres by international composers Esa-Pekka Salonen, Hanna Kulenty and Peter Eötvös, as well as music of Steve Reich.

The Soundstream Collective will also hold a free open rehearsal at the Madley Performance Space on September 29. Erik Griswold will discuss his new work a leaf falls and invite questions from the audience, followed by a performance of excerpts of his work.
