Re-igniting the MOMENTUM Commissions

Re-igniting the MOMENTUM Commissions

The Australian Music Centre is proud to announce a new round of its MOMENTUM Commissions. Generously supported by Hendrik Prins, the MOMENTUM Commissions will award $2,500 to two composers to each create a new work for a small chamber ensemble.

The MOMENTUM Commissions were originally developed in 2020 in response to the impact of the COVID pandemic on the availability of creative opportunities and financial stability for Australian musicians. The initiative connected private philanthropists together and saw the creation of new works from five composers across three rounds of commissions. In 2020, recipients of the MOMENTUM Commissions were: Rae Howell, Zinia Chan, Anne Cawrse, Elizabeth Younan, and Nicole Murphy.

The Australian Music Centre will continue MOMENTUM as an ongoing program to continue to provide opportunities for creativity and career sustainability across the art music, jazz, experimental music, and sound art spheres. Bridging artists with private philanthropists is also an important aspect of the program amidst an increasingly competitive funding environment.

CEO Catherine Haridy says, "We are thrilled to re-launch the MOMENTUM Commissions program to provide Australian artists opportunities to create new work across diverse musical practices and disciplines. Connecting private funding with creators is just one of the ways that the AMC is advocating for Australian music and composition. We wholeheartedly thank Mr. Prins for his generosity, enthusiasm, and support for us to kickstart this initiative once again."

Composers are invited to submit their expression of interest proposal addressing the commission brief. While the program is open to all Australian composers, First Nations composers, gender diverse composer, and culturally diverse composers are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be a current AMC member or an AMC represented artist in order to be eligible for selection.

Download the full brief, including submission guidelines or view more details via our Opportunities listing.

Submissions will close on Friday 13 May 2022, 5pm AEST.

Results will be announced by Monday 20 June 2022.

The Australian Music Centre is also accepting expressions of interest from donors and philanthropists to fund future commissions. Please direct queries and expressions of interest to: info@australianmusiccentre.com.au
