To celebrate their 80th anniversary year in 2012, the Sydney Symphony has launched a composition competition for new orchestral works. The SSO invites composers to submit new, previously unperformed orchestral compositions, of a maximum duration of 10 minutes, for large orchestra. Submitted works should in some way celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Sydney Symphony in 1932 and take inspiration from other anniversaries in 2012 (Sydney Harbour Bridge and the ABC).

The competition is open to all Australian composers who have not yet had a work performed by the Sydney Symphony in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. The winning entry will be performed at a Sydney Symphony concert on 22 March 2012 in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy. The performance will also be broadcast nationally and streamed live on the internet. There is a monetary prize of $5,000 for the winning composition.

Submissions will be adjudicated by a panel consisting of John Davis (ISCM Chairman), composers Mary Finsterer and Matthew Hindson, and conductor Richard Gill.

Each entrant can submit one score. The deadline for submissions is Friday 18 November 2011. For exact submission guidelines, including the instrumentation requirements, see the Sydney Symphony website.
