National Big Band Composition Competition

The deadline for the National Big Band Composition Competition is rapidly approaching. Presented by Sydney’s Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra in conjunction with APRA and ABC Classic FM, the competition aims to provide a platform for Australian and NZ large ensemble composers to have their work performed.

The top four finalists – contenders for the $3,5000 cash prize – will travel to Sydney to participate in rehearsals with the orchestra, culminating in a live performance on ABC Classic FM on 18 May 2008. The Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra was formed in 2003 to provide a serious platform for Australian large ensemble composers to have their work performed, recorded and broadcast. Since its inception, under the artistic direction of David Theak, the Orchestra has been nominated in 2006 & 2007 as Australian Jazz Ensemble of the year, released 2 critically acclaimed CDs (both domestically and internationally) and toured the East Coast of Australia with German Uber composer Florian Ross.
