New music resource kit: Music in a frame (Ann Carr-Boyd)

Music in a frame - celebrating the work of Ann Carr-Boyd, by Frank O'Brien. Secondary school music education series by the Australian Music Centre; commissioned by the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith.

This kit by Frank O'Brien, dedicated to the work of Ann Carr-Boyd, will introduce secondary and tertiary music students to the way in which a composer germinates the initial seed of composition, develops these ideas using the concepts of music, appropriates and transforms existing musical ideas and styles, and arranges original themes from one form to another. Four works have been selected for close analysis: 'the waves clasp one another', the first movement from Moonbeams Kiss the Sea (piano), Rag for Razz (piano), Tea for Tugger (string quartet and oboe) and Prelude for Luigi (violin).

The kit includes a teachers' booklet with original works and arrangements for student performance; articles on musical genres that have influenced Ann Carr-Boyd's compositional style; exercises and tasks in composition, and more. The accompanying CD contains compositions by Ann Carr-Boyd, including solos performed by John Martin and a specially commissioned work performed by the Sydney Symphony Fellowship. It also contains extracts and a selection of comparative works. The kit has links to the syllabus for Years 7 through 12.

The kit has been commissioned by the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith
