The New Music Network – a collective of contemporary music ensembles, sound artists and organisations from around Australia – kicks off its 2009 concert series in Sydney this weekend with a concert by Ensemble Offspring. The series continues with ten further events over the rest of the year. In addition to these, there are five concerts in the new music mini series, two of which bring together performances of several fine soloists.

The series is bigger than ever, but what matters more is the richness of new music that it has collected under its umbrella. The ensembles taking part range from the Sydney-based Offspring to Melbourne's Aphids, from Queensland's Clocked Out Duo to Taikoz, Karak, Topology, AustraLYSIS, Continuum Sax, Kammer, Halcyon and Machine for Making Sense. The repertory ranges from Stockhausen and the French spectralists to many premieres of new Australian works. The yearly Peggy Glanville Hicks Address, which also forms part of the NMN series, will be given by Robyn Archer.
