Interplay, a triple bill of new Australian ballet works had its world premiere in Melbourne on Thursday (28 August). The three composers - Richard Mills, Ross Edwards and Gerard Brophy - have cooperated with three international choreographers (Stephen Baynes, Nicolo Fonte and Matjash Mrozewski, respectively) and designers (Michael Pearce, Markus Pysall, Adam Gardnir) to produce three unique and very different ballet works.

Nicolo Fonte, the choreographer of The Possibility Space, tells about his cooperation with Ross Edwards:

"Ross Edwards not only created the beautifully evocative score for this ballet but also gave me a very rich and detailed synopsis of his inspiration for the piece and its four sections. The predominant idea is that the music represents a journey and this, for me, is an excellent metaphor for the abstract language of dance. Ross wrote of a fragmented society, a longing for something different, a resolution to pursue the ideal and crossing over green water towards a mystical island and, finally, a celebration."

Matjash Mrozewski's and Gerard Brophy's work is based on the Greek myth of Semele, while Richard Mills's and Stephen Baynes's Night Path deals with the dark and dreamy world of night-time.

The triple bill has a dedicated website at interplayer.com.au, documenting the creative process and the practicalities of an international collaboration through emails, audio, video, photographs and sketches.
