MacKenzie-Spencer and Yu win the 3MBS awards

Loclan MacKenzie-Spencer and Julian Yu are the prizewinners of the 2008 3MBS National Composer Awards. Their entries competed with 31 other new orchestral scores by Australian composers. MacKenzie-Spencer's winning composition, Verwicklung, brings him the 2008 Betty Amsden Award for Orchestral Composition ($10,000), while Julian Yu's work won the 2008 APRA Award for Orchestral Composition ($2,000). MacKenzie-Spencer has written music especially for theatre, and his choral work Drei Gedichte, based on the poems of Hermann Hesse, was performed by the Australian Chamber Choir on its European tour last year. MacKenzie-Spencer studies composition at Melbourne University, where his teachers have been Julian Yu and Stuart Greenbaum.

The 3MBS National Composer Awards are organised by the Melbourne-based classical community radio station 3MBS in association with Orchestra Victoria, the Arts Centre, Betty Amsden OAM, the Robert Salzer Foundation and Australasian Performing Right Association, APRA. The winning composition by MacKenzie-Spencer will be premiered in a free concert at Hamer Hall, the Arts Centre, by Orchestra Victoria on 24 July, conducted by Marko Letonja.
