Janet Seidel (1955-2017)

The Australian vocalist and pianist Janet Seidel died on Monday 7 August 2017.

Described by The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD (UK 2006) as 'Australia's first lady of jazz singing', Janet Seidel recorded 18 albums, covering stylistic ground from easy listening to lounge, cabaret and jazz. Several of these were nominated for awards, and were well reviewed around the world. On Moon Of Manakoora won the Bell Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album of 2006.

Janet Seidel started perfoming in the 1970s, and first appeared with a trio - with guitarist/bassist brother David and drummer Billy Ross - in the early 1980s. She worked with many Australian jazz musicians, with her 1990s albums featuring collaborators such as Tom Baker, Ian Date, Paul Williams, Bobby Gebert, Kevin Hunt and Col Nolan. On tour she mostly performed with her trio, now with guitarist Chuck Morgan and brother David on double bass. Together they launched her first forays into cabaret in 2000 with a tribute show (and CD) to Doris Day called Doris and Me. Other cabaret shows and albums included Dear Blossom and Delovely.

Janet Seidel's groups toured Australia and played at the country's most important jazz festivals. She also toured to the USA, Europe, the Middle East and many South East Asian countries. Japan was the scene of particular success, with 12 of her albums released and many tours conducted there. In 2011-2012 she spent a lot of time in the UK, touring there as well as elsewhere in Europe, including sell-out shows at such well-known venues as Ronnie Scott's. She also appeared in front of orchestras such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Canberra Pops Orchestra.

Her last album, Far Away Places, was released in 2013.
