Introducing the Australian Classical:NEXT Fellows 2022

Introducing the Australian Classical:NEXT Fellows 2022

The Australian Music Centre is proud to support three emerging leaders in music to attend Classical:NEXT in Hanover as part of the Fellowship Program: Nat Bartsch, Luke Tierney, and Tamara Kohler.

The AMC have participated in Classical:NEXT's Fellowship Program since 2017, supporting Australian composers, performing artists, and industry professionals to participate in this global networking and exchange hub. As part of the program, each Fellow will be paired with a seasoned Classical:NEXT veteran to guide them in navigating the network of over 1,000 attendees and making meaningful industry connections.

Nat, Luke, and Tamara were initially selected to attend as Fellows in 2020 before the event was cancelled two years running. Now, more equipped and ready to go, we catch up with the three Fellows to share their goals and what they're looking forward to at the Classical:NEXT 2022.

Nat BartschNat Bartsch is a Melbourne-based pianist and composer who moves effortlessly between classical, neoclassical, jazz and children's genres. She has released six albums of original music - her most recent album, Hope, earned her an ARIA nomination for the second year running. Nat is the first female instrumental artist to be nominated in both jazz and ARIA categories.

As a composer, she has been commissioned to write for ensembles including Plexus, Inventi Ensemble, Muses Trio, and is currently studying at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music with Stuart Greenbaum.

Ready to embark on her journey to Hanover, Nat said, "I'm so excited to attend Classical:NEXT, and foster new relationships and collaborations, both with fellow Australians and international folk, in the classical music industry. My dream is to reach an international market more effectively. This is a great first step, post-COVID. I'm also excited to travel on a long-haul flight and watch movies of my choosing for once (#parenting). It's a real honour to have been selected for a Fellowship, particularly as an artist who sits between jazz and classical. I feel welcomed into a lovely new community."

Luke TierneyLuke Tierney is an artist manager, supporting the careers of traditional and contemporary art music performers and composers. He is the Founder and Director of Tier 1 Arts, offering artists support through a management and/or agent capacity (including Emily Granger, Julian Day, and Bree van Reyk) and production and marketing support for a range of ensembles.

Luke's experience spans across the music industry, with previous roles in radio production, arts funding, orchestral management, and education.

For Luke, Classical:NEXT is about exchange: "I'm attending Classical:NEXT to build connections and explore international opportunities for the remarkable artists that I represent, to share my knowledge and connections with other delegates, and to learn as much as I can from other professionals that will guide my own work in this very exciting and competitive industry. I look forward to spending time meeting with other passionate artists and arts workers, understanding more about how things operate in international territories."

Tamara KohlerTamara Kohler is an Australian flutist, noted for her "fearless execution" in new music performance. She is Co-Artistic Director of art music ensemble Rubiks Collective and incoming Director of the UK based charity, Contemporary Music for All. Tamara is passionate about opening access within the arts for underrepresented voices, working with arts charities Raw Material (UK) and Short Black Opera (AUS) to design and support meaningful community platforms.

Working between Australia and the UK, Tamara is interested in exploring creative work and community engagement abroad. She says, "I am interested in meeting fellow artists and presenters throughout Europe who are creating meaningful art and practising innovative ways of connecting with communities through their work. I am also really excited to get to know some of the creative and logistical minds behind some of my favourite arts organisations in the world."

As an Australian Fellow, Tamara says, "I'm really proud to have a platform to share some of the unique projects I'm currently involved in, and hope to find avenues for these opportunities to prosper further. It's a total honour to represent the incredible Australian arts scene and stand as an ambassador for all of my dear colleagues. I will be proudly sharing the word about all of the incredible creatives back home and ensuring our creative footprint is felt."

Classical:NEXT 2022 is held 17-20 May in Hanover, Germany.
