International Spotlight on Australian Composers

Performing Australian Music Competition (PAMC)

International Spotlight on Australian Composers

With technological advances making the world increasingly smaller, the international performance of Australian new music is flourishing. Composers – using online social networking tools – are connecting more easily with performers all over the globe, resulting in performances that otherwise might not have occurred.

Yet, it is while participating in competitions such as the ‘Performing Australian Music Competition’ that performers are still often initially exposed to the diverse repertoire that comprises our new music community. And diversity is what this competition is about. The first international Performing Australian Music Competition – which took place in London in 2001 – saw 130 young musicians of 20 nationalities perform repertoire from 46 Australian composers!

Next year Performing Australian Music Competition 2007/8 is offering prizes amounting to £15,000. Competitors will be judged not only on their competency, but also on the program in which they choose to present – participants using the Australian Music Centre as an important resource for discovering works to perform. The competition itself marks significant developments at the AMC in eventually making its vast library of Australian scores – representing some 500 composers – available online.

Partnering the PAMC 2007/8, the Royal College of Music celebrates its own long association with Australian musicians and will hold a collection of Australian scores later this year. The four days of preliminary rounds (31 March to 3 April 2008) – all open to the public – will be held in the RCM’s Recital Hall. The climax of the Competition will be a Gala Grand Final on Tuesday 8 April 2008, hosted by the Australian High Commissioner in the magnificent Exhibition Hall of Australia House, London.
