ABC opens its archives of rare works

classic/amp website launched

ABC Classic FM has launched a web service that will give the general public access to an increasing number of previously unavailable and rare recordings of Australian music. classic/amp is a growing online collection of classical and experimental music drawn from the ABC's archive of music recordings. Forty or so Australian works created over the past 100 years form the first instalment, and the selection will be added to over the coming months.

One of the interesting aspects of classic/amp project is that it includes music by composers and musicians whose work has so far been poorly represented on commercial discs. This will benefit music teachers and students as well as the general audience.

The content will be linked to related websites of cultural partner organisations such as the Australian Music Centre, the National Library of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive. The website also includes background information such as recording details and program notes.

The Australian Music Centre is working closely with classic/amp to ensure that the streamed audio content will be well integrated into the AMC’s new online catalogue, providing users with direct access to a broad range of previously inaccessible content.

The title 'classic/amp' comes from the url (web address) of the website, in which the letters 'amp' stand for 'Australian Music Presented'.
