The Australia Council is inviting Australian musicians, sound artists and media artists working in sound to apply for a three-month residency in the AlloSphere at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2011, the Council will support one Australian music, sound or media artist with $20,000 towards travel, accommodation and per diem expenses, and production costs for a research project.

The Allosphere - a 30-foot diameter sphere built inside a three-story near anechoic (echo free) cube - allows for synthesis, manipulation, exploration and analysis of large-scale data sets in an environment that can simulate virtually real sensorial perception. Artistically it offers the opportunity for the creation and performance of formally innovative new works and the potential to explore new modes of expression in an immersive environment, fusing elements of music, sound art, architecture, games etc.

The Australia Council is the first organisation in the world to support a formal artist residency at the AlloSphere. The residency is the result of a partnership between with the University of California Santa Barbara, where the facility is located, and the Australia Council's Music Board and Inter-Arts Office.

Closing date for applications is 14 March 2011 - more details about the residency are available on the Australia Council website. For more details about the AlloSphere, see www.allosphere.ucsb.edu.

The Australian Music Centre connects people around the world to Australian composers and sound artists. By facilitating the performance, awareness and appreciation of music by these creative artists, it aims to increase their profile and the sustainability of their art form. Established in 1974, the AMC is now the leading provider of information, resources, materials and products relating to Australian new music.
