Australia Council grants to Chan, Day, Grenfell, Illean, Pateras, Yedid

AMC-represented artists Lyle Chan, Julian Day, Maria Grenfell, Lisa Illean, Anthony Pateras and Yitzhak Yedid are among the successful grant recipients of the most recent round of funding from the Australia Council for the Arts. Lyle Chan and Yitzhak Yedid both received grants of appr. $20,000 - Chan for composing a series of sonatas, and Yedid for two new commissions and a residency in Darmstadt. Maria Grenfell and Anthony Pateras both received appr. $14,000 for composing new works. Grenfell will write a triple concerto for the US-based Ivy Street Ensemble, while Pateras will compose four new works for solo instrument and electronics. Lisa Illean and Julian Day received $10,000 each for composing new works, Illean for female voice, electronics and moving image and Day for the Southern Cross Soloists. Grant recipients in various categories also included Jim Denley, Lucas Abela, Marc Hannaford, Lucian McGuiness and Rajiv Jayaweera.

UK-based pianist Zubin Kanga received $25,000 for 'Piano Ex Machina', a commissioning, development and touring project for piano and interactive multimedia, involving composers Jon Rose, Tristan Coelho, Ben Carey and Kate Neal. The Brisbane-based Kupka's Piano received funding for commissions, concerts and recording, the Sydney-based Backstage Music for their 2018 concert series and the Melbourne-based Rubiks Collective also for 2018 concerts.

Festivals funded in 2018 include Four Winds, Canberra International Music Festival, the second Australian Resonant Bodies festival, and Liquid Architecture. Funding was also granted for other organisations such as the Sydney-based SIMA (Sydney Improvised Music Association) and the Adelaide-based COMA (Creative Original Music Adelaide).
