Composer and songwriter David Bridie has won the 2019 Australia Council Don Banks Music Award. One of eight Australia Council Awards, the Don Banks Music Award acknowledges a distinguished artist who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to music in Australia. The 2019 Australia Council Award for Emerging & Experimental Arts went to Joyce Hinterding - both winners received their awards in a ceremony at Sydney's Carriageworks on Monday evening.

David Bridie has enjoyed a distinguished career as one of Australia's most innovative musicians. His repertoire ranges from recording artist to soundtrack composer, producer, lyricist, songwriter and singer, as well as specialist in the music of Melanesia. Bridie was a finalist for the 2017 Art Music Award for Excellence by an individual for a Bit na Ta, a collaborative music project involving the Tolai people of Papua New Guinea.

Joyce Hinterding's work explores physical and virtual dynamics. Her practice is based on investigations into energetic forces, through custom-built field recording and monitoring technologies. These explorations into acoustic and electromagnetic phenomena have produced large sculptural antenna works, experimental drawings, video and sound-producing installations and experimental audio works for performance.
