Art Music Fund returns with $100,000 in grants

Art Music Fund returns with $100,000 in grants

Applications have today opened for the second round of significant funding for new commissioned work from the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund. Launched earlier in 2016, the Fund offers $100,000 worth of funding to Australasian art music composers. The goal is to see new works distributed as widely as possible among national and international audiences.

Composers in Australia and NZ are invited to apply for the 2017 Art Music Fund. A total pool of $100,000 is available for the creation of commissioned work that is innovative, displays professional compositional craft and represents a benchmark of excellence in its field. The work must have committed partners to ensure it is presented multiple times, and it is expected that composers will collaborate with ensembles, orchestras, producers, record companies, broadcasters, festivals and other parties to propose the writing of the work.

The Art Music Fund has previously provided grants to 12 Australasian composers: Sandy Evans, Alexander Garsden, Samuel Holloway, Cat Hope, James Hullick, Liza Lim, Lisa Illean, Mark Oliveiro, Matthias Schack-Arnott, Dan Thorpe, Meg Travers, and Erkki Veltheim.

'The Art Music Fund provides resources to support composers which is much needed at a time of generally reduced government funding for individual artists in Australia', says Liza Lim, a recipient of an Art Music Fund grant to develop an extended work for Ensemble Klangforum Wien. 'The support of APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre gives significant industry-level recognition to the field of contemporary classical music encouraging innovation and artistic risk-taking in this area.'

> Application guidelines and the online application form can be found on the APRA AMCOS website. Applications for this round close on 21 February at 5pm (AEDT). Successful applicants will be notified at the end of April.
