APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre are excited to announce Richard Gill OAM as the recipient of the Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award for the 2014 Art Music Awards. He will accept the Award before his peers at a ceremony to be held at the Plaza Ballroom, Melbourne on Tuesday 26 August 2014.

Richard Gill is one of Australia's pre-eminent conductors and has worked with every major Australian orchestra. He is respected and recognised internationally for his extensive work as a music educator.

Throughout his career of over 50 years, Richard Gill has demonstrated a true commitment to the musical development of young musicians. Gill started out as a high school music teacher, and has since held positions including Dean of the Western Australian Conservatorium of Music, Music Director of the Victorian Opera and, currently, Artistic Director of Sydney Symphony's Education Program. Gill has performed with Opera Queensland, Opera Australia and the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Festivals. He has conducted numerous Australian works, including many world premieres.

In 1994 Gill was honoured for his services to music with an Order of Australia medal and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Western Australia. He received the Bernard Heinze Award for 'Services to Music in Australia' in 1999, a Classical Music Award for 'Distinguished Contribution to the Advancement of Australian Music in Education' in 2004, and the Don Banks Music Award in 2006.

Established in 1990, the Distinguished Services Award recognises an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to Australian new music throughout their career.
