A new education resource: Peter Sculthorpe's String Quartet No. 16

Peter Sculthorpe: String Quartet No. 16 music resource kit by Lorraine Milne investigates the creative process of musical composition and the connection of this work to refugees in Australia's detention centres. While the kit is particularly suitable for senior students, it could also be used with young students, specifically in relation to the broader issue of refugees in detention becoming the impetus for musical composition.

Topics discussed in the kit include traditional songs or chants as the basis for a composition, characteristic techniques and special effects used by Peter Sculthorpe in his String Quartet No. 16, and extramusical ideas as inspiration for works of music. The kit includes a music study guide, a full score of String Quartet No. 16, and a CD containing a recording of the work by the Goldner String Quartet.

The author of the kit, Lorraine Milne has worked as a musician and music educator all her adult life. As a composer, arranger and musical director, she has worked extensively with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, as well as Suzuki, Yamaha Music and AMEB. She has composed songs for children as well as music for theatre productions. She has written curriculum materials and presented professional development courses for Musica Viva in Schools, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Opera House, Oz Opera, Australian Society for Music Education, the Song Room and the National Gallery of Victoria. She has also taught at Melbourne University. She was a founding member of the Australian Performing Group at the Pram Factory and worked for 15 years at the Music Branch, Education Department of Victoria, producing songbooks and curriculum support materials.

The kit has been commissioned by the Australian Society of Music Education (ASME) and Associate Professor Neryl Jeanneret, Melbourne University Graduate School of Education, and published by the Australian Music Centre.
