A new education resource: Four Songs from 'Dead Songs' (Schultz)
The AMC's new music resource kit, Four Songs from 'Dead Songs' by Andrew Schultz includes exercises and composition activities designed to introduce to students some key concepts from intertextuality to extended techniques.
The kit, written by Nicole Saintilan, contains a score, a recording, and educational notes relating to Andrew Schultz's work Four Songs from 'Dead Songs'. Four Songs from 'Dead Songs' consists of settings of epitaphs, collected from seaside cemeteries in New South Wales: Wombarra, Bulli, South Head and Waverley. The original work from 1991 is a cycle of nine songs for soprano, clarinet, cello, and piano, lasting 35 minutes. This work is an arrangement of four songs from the original cycle, and was arranged by the composer for high voice and piano in 2010.
The songs are compact and rich in compositional technique, providing an excellent resource for analysis. The works can be performed individually or as a set, and are of varying difficulty in expectation of a range of abilities. They are all less than five minutes and suitable for high school vocal performance.
The music resource kit has been put together with senior classroom music in mind, and is suitable for the study of Australian Music of the last 25 years, and for study of Music Investigation, Music Performance and Music Style and Composition, as well as touching on repertoire from the Renaissance and the Romantic period. The kit is also suitable for teachers of classroom music, years 7-10, for teaching the topic Australian Art Music. Material in the pack can be used for one-off lessons, to provide a unit of five double lessons, or for performance purposes.
