[Updated 4 April - video link] Composer Peter Sculthorpe accepted his Award for Distinguished Services to Australian music at Tuesday's Art Music Awards ceremony in Sydney, and took the opportunity to draw attention to the AMC's perpetual difficulty securing viable levels of funding for the organisation, following funding cuts of effectively 30% over 2012 and 2013:

'After nearly 40 years, you'd think that the AMC wouldn't be still struggling, and still having funding cut. It's done such wonderful service to Australian music, and I believe that nations are defined by their music, by all their arts, and I wouldn't like to think that Australia is an exception to this. So I'd like to see the future of the AMC ensured, and I'd like plenty of good fortune ahead.'

Listen to Sculthorpe's acceptance speech in its entirety (4mins, mp3 file).

Sculthorpe's speech was also highlighted in a news article on the ABC website - the ABC also interviewed Nigel Westlake, who received the Work of the Year: Orchestral award for his composition Missa Solis - Requiem for Eli. The work is dedicated to Westlake's son who died in tragic circumstances in 2008 at the age of 21 - the Westlake family has also established a foundation 'Smugglers of Light' in their son's memory.

Both composers and the awards ceremony also featured on ABC television's evening news programs on Wednesday 4 April (see: video on ABC Lateline website).
