It’s that time of year again – time to reflect on the Australian new music community’s activities during last year. 2007 saw the premiere of many outstanding new works, the success of various new music festivals, the national and international performance of existing Australian repertoire, the ongoing promotional and advocacy activities of music organisations, the implementation of new music initiatives, and, perhaps most importantly, it saw the endless motivation of certain individuals who continuously drive the vibrancy and energy of our community.

The Classical Music Awards are dedicated to recognising these kinds of activities – significant contributions to Australian new music. Presented by the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) and the Australian Music Centre (AMC), eleven national awards and various state awards are given in categories covering composition, performance, music education and music in a regional area for achievements over the past year. The Awards – judged by a panel of leading composers, performers, musicologists, educators and critics – are prestigious markers of exceptional talent.

So why not play a part in supporting Australian music by submitting a nomination? Perhaps you saw a particularly good performance last year, or listened to an inspiring new work? Or perhaps you were involved in organising an event or activity that supports Australian new music?

Nominating a person or an organisation for an award is a quick and easy process. Simply fill out the instant nomination form on the Australian Music Centre’s website. And if you submit your nomination by Wednesday 12 March you don’t need to worry about supplying any support material: we’ll do that for you!

If you need help remembering what performances took place last year, the form provides links to the AMC’s 2007 Calendar listings. Alternatively you can contact the AMC and speak with a staff member.
