MOMENTUM II

MOMENTUM II Commission awarded to Zinia Chan

20 October 2020. The winner of the second MOMENTUM Commission ($5,000), funded by Cinque Artist Management and intended for early-career artists, has been announced. The Melbourne-based composer, pianist and event producer Zinia Chan is known for her passion and dedication in promoting collaborations between Australasian performers and composers. Chan has worked in theatre, film and contemporary music, and recently completed her Graduate Diploma in Music (Composition) under Brenton Broadstock and Christine McCombe at the University of Melbourne.

The guidelines for this opportunity included a requirement for the finished work to include elements of cultural diversity, resulting in a broad range of excellent proposals. Zinia Chan's winning proposal includes collaborating with young Indigenous storytellers from the Queensland-based Digi Youth Arts, didjeribone guru Tjupurru and string players of DeepBlue. The project will generate an original work exploring multiple facets of Australian cultural identity. Through cross-pollination of ideas with proposed artists, the work will be presented as a short story with potential to grow into a rich series of musical short stories in the future. The team of creatives come from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences which will inform this project by illuminating intriguing by-ways of Australian life which are rarely explored.

The assessment panel consisted of Daniel Rojas, Annette Tesoriero, Aaron Wyatt and Kiri Zakinthinos, with moderator Paul Mason.

'We are absolutely thrilled to have this opportunity to further engage with our Australian and Indigenous youth communities and to further explore our Australian culture', said Zinia Chan on behalf of her creative team. ' Once again, thank you to the AMC and for the donor's generosity for this opportunity.'

About the MOMENTUM II Commission

The AMC announced MOMENTUM II, and call for Expressions of Interest, in August 2020, with Cinque Artist Management generously providing an amount of $5,000 to support a commission as part of the MOMENTUM series. The amount includes a $4,000 commission fee, and $1,000 as a contribution to the performance/realisation of the work.

As with the first MOMENTUM Commission, MOMENTUM II was designed to offer practical support in these uncertain times, this time to an early-career artist, to create and realise a work. The commission recognised the challenges faced by composers/creators who have completed their formal music or composition studies, or other development of their creative practice, and were at the early stages of establishing their professional career and networks.

The commissioned work was required to incorporate elements that embrace cultural diversity.

Candidates for this opportunity needed to demonstrate that they have already produced a body of work, both during their formal studies, and since.

The outcome: completion of a work, realised in a performance either in a concert presentation or via an online platform.

The successful applicant was required to provide a report by 31 January 2021, outlining details of the work undertaken to that date.
