Work Overview

Cranes was written for Phoebe Green throughout the Autumn of 2016 and early 2017. Phoebe's gracious attention to fine details of the piece has inevitably shaped its subtle soundworld. Cranes is composed of musical fragments that gain in meaning as they are sounded through the hue of different harmonies, and in shifting combinations. After some consideration, we decided to expose these fragments in the way the piece is set on the page, with small gaps of white punctuating the staves like teeth. The performer, however, is asked to navigate these in such a way that the line on which these fragments are threaded is not broken.
