Product details

Composed for the Zelman Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of their eightieth anniversary, We all fly blind was premiered in November 2013, under the baton of Mark Shiell.

The musical material behind the work owes its genesis to an earlier time - originally part of a rock song by the same composer, reborn here in a symphonic texture. The deep and meaningful words to the song were "We all fly blind / On our way to paradise," and these can still be sung to certain passages...

The work involves many extra-Classical influences, including rock and jazz. The pitch palette of We all fly blind is a mixture of populist common chord harmonies, the original rock song's open fifths, and organic modes formed by using the principal harmonies as scales - a technique the composer has been using increasingly in recent works. This technique ensures that the piece feels like a homogenous whole, even though it is not limited by traditional harmonic expectations.
